What the IRS is and when to file

The IRS (Imposto sobre o Rendimento das Pessoas Singulares) is filed annually between April and June. Any Portuguese tax resident with income in the previous year is required to file — even if they only worked a few months.

For first-year immigrants, the process has important nuances: you might benefit from the Non-Habitual Resident (NHR) status, the "new resident" regime, or specific deductions. We handle all of this for you.

Frequently asked questions about IRS

  • Do I need to file IRS in my first year in Portugal?
Yes, if you were a Portuguese tax resident at least 183 days of the previous year, or if you have a permanent home in Portugal. Each case is assessed individually.
  • What is the Non-Habitual Resident (NHR)?
A special tax regime for recent immigrants that offers reduced rates for 10 years. We check if you qualify and handle activation.
  • How much does this cost vs an accountant?
€20 vs €100-300 charged by accountants. For simple cases (employment income and some deductions) our service is more than enough.
  • What if the Tax Authority asks for clarifications?
We support you through clarifications for 12 months after submission. No extra cost.
  • Can I claim back withholdings?
Yes — that's exactly what filing IRS does. If your employer withheld more than necessary, you get the difference back. Average refunds for first-year immigrants are €200-€800.
  • What if I have foreign income?
We handle that too — you just need to provide proof. In complex cases we can suggest a partner accountant.
