What the NISS is
The NISS (Número de Identificação da Segurança Social) is your enrolment number in the Portuguese social security system. It is mandatory for any worker, employee or self-employed — without a NISS, your employer cannot legally report your income.
In Portugal, NIF and NISS are different numbers. NIF is the tax number (Tax Authority), NISS is the social security number. You need both to work.
